Religion is, without a doubt, one of the most controversial and touchy subjects that anyone can talk about. Why is this subject so touchy? Because when we receive criticism on what we believe in, with our head and heart, we either begin to question it, or we want to hold onto it for dear life. Religion is defined as “a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.” (via dictionary.refrence.com) In a nutshell, religion is what we believe to be the truth about the unknown. i.e. the creation of the Universe and mankind, the purpose of life, and what happens when we die. Religion also sets a person’s code of moral standards, values, and virtues. Religion is created to control and protect people. But isn’t the government’s job to control and protect people? The answer is yes, but if we have some kind of being or entity that is beyond human capacity for understanding and that controls the unknown, it gives people much more power. Religions are essentially all the same. Of course there are different rituals, beliefs, and practices, but they all point to the same things. A divine entity or entities, a moral code, and an explanation for the unexplainable.
But what is this divine entity that religions try to convince us of? That is the god or gods that that particular religion believes in. But what are these gods? I believe that there is one god, but that god is not a floating, invisible man or a ton of people in some sacred city. God is an entity that is in everything. God is in the walls of a house, in a rock, God is what give humanity a soul. Yes, a rock is a rock, but what does a rock do? A rock sits there and does nothing. God would be that power that makes the rock sit there. God is what gives us a soul. We have all these different explanations for why things physically happen. Like Gravity, for example. but what makes gravity work? what makes inertia? those unknown factors like gravity are what God is.
God is also a creator. The Big Bang Theory is the major accepted theory of how the universe was made. But for there to be a creation, there must be a creator. That creator is God. In the big bang, there was a prime-evil atom that ruptured, creating what is now known as the universe. What was that prime-evil atom? That atom was God. We know that the universe is expanding, meaning that there must be new material being created. But who’s creating that material? God.
God has many aspects; love, forgiveness, etc. These aspects are evident because if God created us in his image (like the Bible says,) and if we have different aspects, then God would have to have different aspects as well. God’s characteristics are divided into two groups: masculine and feminine.
One thing that god is not is a ruler. The universe is ruled by chance. The chance that you meet someone or not is totally up to yourself. We control our own destinies on this Earth. There is no “master plan” for humanity. We are here, and we must live for ourselves. Anything and everything is totally up to the person. God has not hand in it. The evidence that points me to this is that if God didn’t want you to smoke, it wouldn’t let you. If God doesn’t want you to curse, it wouldn’t have made curse words. People give God its power by believing in it. Much like a great leader, let’s take Adolf Hitler for example. Hitler was an amazing leader and speaker. He pulled Germany out of the worst situation ever in post- WWI times. Hitler basically turned a third- world country into an industrialized super power again within 10-30 years… If that’s not a good leader, then I don’t know what is. People believed in Hitler, people believed that this guy with the funny mustache was the greatest leader that the world had ever seen. That belief gave Hitler the power to accomplish his twisted agenda of the eradication of the Jewish and non- Aryans. The belief that people had in Hitler consumed him. He was able to lead people into his sick, sadistic plan. If Hitler were never believed in, then the Holocaust would have never happened.
In short, God is the unexplainable. God is the creator, and driving force behind everything. God is not, however, a ruler. We control ourselves. We chose to do what we want. God has no hand in what we make, do, say, etc. God is far greater than anything that anyone could imagine. the Japanese term Kamikaze says it the best (and no, God is not a Japanese suicide pilot.) The term Kamikaze means “Divine Wind.” That’s a good way of looking at god.
So why do religions point to a human- like deity as the true God? Because it’s a way to explain that which can not be explained. The religious leaders can not even begin to fathom what God is, so they put it in a human- like form to try and explain. God’s so- called power comes from the people themselves. The more they believe in a christian god versus the hundu gods gives the christian picture of God that much more power. Then, religious leaders take that power and turn it around to control the people. God is only as powerful as people make it to be. Let’s take an analogy. All of a sudden, someone decides to worship a roll of toilet paper. That person claims that this particular roll, in all of its fluffiness, is the one true God. Everyone would look at this guy as a nut case, and no one would believe him. But that toilet paper god is powerful to him, because he believes in it as the one true god. Let’s say that the nutty guy who worships toilet paper gets someone else to follow him in the worshiping, then that roll becomes twice as powerful. That person gets two more people to follow the TP god, and its power doubles again, and so forth.
The power vested in God by the people allows the religious leaders to set up a “code” of morality, virtues, and values. This code is another way to control people. Not necessarily in a bad way, though. People need to be controlled by something. It keeps general and common peace and good within mankind. Without a religion to keep the people controlled, everyone would have a different set of moral values and virtues. In an anarchistic (meaning people control themselves, no government or religion) world, we would have literally mass riot. People would be truly free, therefore crimes against someone would go unanswered, murderers would run free, the world would be an very difficult place to live in. People would ban up in tribes to protect one- another. They develop different beliefs, and develop something, beyond Earth and themselves, to create hope. They would develop a God. This is how religion got started.
Now that we have an idea of what God is, what is religion? Remember the above example of the anarchy? That’s how I believe religion was started. When intelligent humanity first evolved with the brain capacity to think about these things, they questioned how were they here? What is the purpose of life? all those philosophical questions that we’re still dealing with today. Religion developed out of myths and legends, to try and explain things. The belief in a higher power, different from our own grew as a common legend or myth. Religion then went on to be believed and followed by more and more people.
Religion has been around probably as long as intelligent humanity has been around. The first known is probably Animism. Animism is seeing divinity through animals, water, wind, and other familiar objects on this Earth. The best known example of animism is native American belief. Polytheistic religion came next. Polytheistic religions are one that believe in many gods or entities, but they are beyond this earth. The best example would be ancient Greek religion. After that came monotheism. Belief in one god. The best known are Judaism and Christianity.
Now we know some facts, we can really get into religion. The basis of religion is power. Religion gets its power from how many people that follow it. The more people that follow a religion, the more power it has. Religion asserts this power by creating rules to keep the people oppressed. The three biggest desires in human life are power, sex, and money. Religion puts rules out to control all of those. Thus, they control the people. (look at the 10 commandments, for example.)
To be blunt, all religions are right, or none of them are. All religions point to a divine being beyond our own, a God. Religion is cultural, religions differ depending on the culture that they were made in. That’s why each one differs yet are the same. The different stories, myths, and rules are dependent on what culture is the religion’s birthplace. Notice in the Old testament of the Bible (also used in Judaism and Islam,) that God says “I am.” He doesn’t say I am the christian God, he does not say I am the Islamic God, he does not say I am the Hindu Gods, He just says I am. God is God, the divine wind in which every religion points to. A friend of mine put it the best way. (In paraphrase,) she said “religions are like rivers. They each flow a different direction, some take longer than others, some are steady, some are fast, but they all get to the same ocean.” That spoke a lot to me. Each religion is different in ways and similar to others, but they all reach the same point, if their right.
So why are people so special? Because we have the ability to think complexly and to chose. We can chose what we want to do. A dog can’t. An elephant can’t. We also have souls and multiple aspects, as stated above. So, if we can get into heaven, have complex abilities, and have multiple aspects, then we would all have to be divine. Yep, we’re all deities.
So, you now understand how religion works. There is one “God,” but he is in no way a human- like form. He is a “divine wind.” we also control our own destinies. Religion is man- made to control people. I like the Buddhist belief best. Basically, the Buddhists say “find your own path to God.” which I think everyone should do. What’s your path?
